Annunciation 1x1 Tech Program for 2018-2019: Middle School Meeting

Aug 23rd, 2018

In keeping with our commitment of building lifelong learners, we want to provide our students with the best tools to enable them to thrive in the digital world.

The IB learner profile strives for global thinkers and international-mindedness, shifting the traditional focus from teaching to learning. We think we can help prepare students to be inquirers, reflective thinkers, and better communicators through a 1-to-1 student Chromebook initiative. A Middle School Social Studies pilot was coordinated during the 2017/2018 school year and was a huge success! We’re ready to launch the 1-to-1 program for all students (grades 6-8) beginning this fall in 2018.

It's about connecting and collaborating in ways we didn't even know were possible. It's providing equity of access, engagement and anytime, anyplace learning. When you teach digital citizenship to your students, you help create a positive school culture that supports safe and responsible technology use. Learning how to use media and technology wisely is an essential skill for life and learning in the 21st century. We want our children to learn new skills, explore new worlds and build new ideas, yet every child has different needs. Initiating a high-quality digital learning experience, where their online data and privacy is protected, will allow them to think critically, act responsibly, and interact positively in the digital world.

A great classroom invites exploration and discovery but also supports all the norms, routines, and procedures that make our day-to-day teaching and learning run smoothly. However, while we already do this for the physical spaces in our classrooms, it's also important to consider the need for digital spaces for our students. Our commitment to 1-to-1 has a lot to do with academics and the need to support and sustain students’ work at school and at home, as well as the desire to integrate technology across all disciplines. A 1-to-1 program will lead to better integration and organization of curriculum across all content areas. Knowing technology gives kids an enormous advantage.

Program details:

  • In order to develop and sustain a high quality 1-to-1 program, we’re implementing an annual “tech fee” of $250.00 per student, to cover specific costs related to the hardware, software and other resources associated with this initiative. The fee will be due at Back to School Night or payment options can be arranged.
  • Parents AND students will be required to attend a Parent 1x1 Tech Meeting on either 8-28-18 or 8-29-18 at 7pm to learn about the 1-to-1 program and answer questions. We’ll review the new policies - Acceptable Use and 1-1 Chromebook Agreement as well as the new fees and expectations of staff, students and parents. Your attendance is necessary in order for us to issue a Chromebook to your child, please plan to attend one of these meetings.
  • Lastly, we’ve invited Erin Walsh, M.A. of Mind Positive Parenting to speak at Annunciation on September 20th at 7pm offering guidance for parenting teens in the digital age. Erin’s father, Dr. David Walsh was the founder of the National Institute on Media and the Family. For more information, please visit: http://drdavewalsh.com/meet

Together, we can empower students to embrace technology for learning and life!
