STEM: Gear Engineers

For grades 1 - 5

STEM Enrichment using LEGO® bricks for the 21st Century learner. Each {YEL!} STEM class follows four basic components:

  • Teach It!...Each class students are taught the basic STEM engineering concepts behind each project.
  • Build It!...Students use LEGO® bricks to build a trundle wheel, merry-go-round and design their own wicked amusement park ride.
  • Explore It!...Then they use that project to explore the basic engineering concepts - this session is focused on gearing concepts.
  • Play It!...Finally they play with their project, modify it, create extensions and have fun working with it. 

Dates:  9/26/2017 to 10/31/2017 6 sessions Tuesdays

YEL GRANDMASTERS OF CHESS (Fall)

For grades k-5

New and returning students invited. Each {YEL!} Chess class follows four basic components:

  • Teach It!...Each class students are taught different chess concepts and coached to implement those concepts into their chess games.
  • Practice It!...Students practice positions set by the coach to improve their understanding of the concept.
  • Puzzle It!...Students are given chess puzzles (constructed by WIM Serafima Sokolovskaya) and work with coach guidance to solve them.
  • Play It!...Each class ends with students playing 20-30 minutes of chess. Coaches often feature in-class tournaments during the session.

Fee includes: ChessKid.com membership (a $49 value), prizes and puzzle sheets.

Dates: 10/26/2017 to 12/14/2017 -- No Class: 11/2, 11/23 -  6 sessions, Thursdays
