Fourth Graders Experiment with Fermi Math Problems

Apr 6th, 2017

Groups of 4th graders worked with parent volunteers on Fermi math problems this week. Fermi math is an enrichment program where students use rough approximations, inspired guesses, statistical estimates from very little data.

"Fermi questions emphasize estimation, numerical reasoning, communicating in mathematics, and questioning skills. Students often believe that "word problems" have one exact answer and that the answer is derived in a unique manner. Fermi questions encourage multiple approaches, emphasize process rather than "the answer", and promote non-traditional problem solving strategies." (source)
